Most children love acting and at Packwood we believe drama to be a vital part of a child’s experience. They develop their imagination and creativity on stage but, most importantly, they gain self-confidence to perform and speak in front of an audience.
Our professional theatre seats 280 on permanent, tiered seating. It has a large stage, is air-conditioned, and benefits from state-of-the-art sound and lighting. As well as dramatic productions, it is a venue for concerts, debates, dance workshops and much more.
The juniors (Years 3 to 5) have one drama lesson a week and produce their own mini production during the year, with every child taking a speaking role. These are performed in Open Assemblies for their parents and the school. In Year 6, the children take the leading parts in our summer musical supported by all the children in the lower years. Year 7s have the opportunity to take part in a ‘Play-in-a-Day’. At the top of the school, there is considerable focus on our senior play in the spring term involving Years 7 and 8. The children relish the chance to be involved and, although auditions are voluntary, nearly all end up taking part in the production.
In addition, there is an annual poetry recital competition, and at the end of the year, we have a show called Leavers Got Talent! We have talent among the staff too, who bravely put on a pantomime or sketch show for the children at Christmas time.
Many of our young actors extend and develop their talents by participating in drama clubs and individual coaching, with some working towards LAMDA exams. The very best are encouraged to take drama scholarships to their senior schools and we are proud that they have won eight awards in the last three years alone.
