Good times at Packwood

The latest in the sequence of 125th anniversary events took place on Saturday evening, and it can be stated with a fair degree of certainty that a good time was had by all!

There were 11 tables, with more than 100 diners altogether, who threw themselves enthusiastically into this Do-It-Yourself Dinner Party. The school provided the tables, chairs and tablecloths; the diners brought everything else: food, wine, glassware, crockery, cutlery and items with which to decorate their tables. Most tables had a theme and a lot of thought and planning had taken place! There were candelabra, balloons, wigs, masks and (in a few cases) fancy dress!

Dinner began, eventually, and then judging took place. In the end, there were two Highly Commended tables – ‘Six Nations’ and ‘Neon’ – but the winner, with tremendous attention to detail, was the ‘Only Fools and Horses’ table, so they received the magnum of Prosecco.

The next part of the evening was pure comedy! The talented and original comedy group ‘From Here to Absurdity’ performed a series of short sketches, about 20 in all. Many were topical and well observed, with references to political correctness, Brexit, Donald Trump and lots more. There was an interval for the recharging of glasses and a quick game of ‘Heads and Tails’ before the second half, which ended with a hilarious song gently poking fun at those who shop at a certain supermarket. A superb end to what all agreed had been a hugely enjoyable evening.
