Packwood Fencing Club continues to thrive and its members had another very successful event on Sunday when the school hosted the West Midlands Epee Championships.
Qualification for the GB individual national competition at the Sheffield English Institute of Sport was at stake and more than 90 fencers from schools and clubs throughout the West Midlands region took part. The standard of competition was high not least in the Under 14 age group in which Packwood’s Captain of Fencing, Edward S, finished in a very creditable fifth place earning himself a wild card place to the national finals.
Joining him will be all four medal winners from the Under 12 age group who achieved a Packwood clean sweep on Sunday. Finn B beat classmate Charlie W in the final to claim Gold leaving Charlie with a well-fought Silver. Hal C and Casper B took Bronze.
Again, it was an all-Packwood lockout on the podium in the Under 10 age groups with Millie P and Oscar P taking Golds in the girls’ and boys’ events respectively. Tom M won Silver and there were Bronzes for Isis R, Bertie W and Barney W.
As well as the national individual championships, Packwood fencers will also be contesting the GB Team titles in March. Four teams will be heading down to Rickmansworth looking to reclaim the titles won by Packwood in 2014 and 2015. After Sunday’s event, confidence is running high.
