Fencing

Fencing is a sport which combines fitness, speed, balance, high levels of hand eye co-ordination and control and challenges pupils to develop high level critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Through team events, peer coaching and refereeing, fencers also develop leadership skills (two head girls and two head boys in recent times) and a cross age group/cross gender team spirit. Fencing is one of the school’s most popular and successful extra-curricular clubs with more than 60 children regularly taking part.

The coaching programme aims to enable every young fencer to reach their potential. Beginning in Year 3, the sport is introduced to the younger children during Junior Activities sessions and is offered to those in Years 6, 7 and 8 as an evening club. In addition, individual lessons and tailored training are available to club members.

During coaching sessions, the sports hall is used a Fencing Salle with training pistes and specialist equipment, including all three weapons (epee, sabre and foil). The coaching team includes Mr Weston (Head of History), top GB fencer and Commonwealth medallist David Gregory, and visiting coach Sir Charles Holcroft. The school is also the West Midlands training hub with visiting coaches Steve and Ismay Cowen, former GB Cadets coach, Nick Chapman, current GB cadet and Junior Commonwealth fencer, Danielle Lawson and 2012 Olympic Armourer, Adrian Mason.
