Last Friday Shrewsbury School ran their second annual Choral Day giving prep school pupils the chance to sing together and to join Shrewsbury’s excellent Chapel Choir.
Packwood choristers from Years 6 and 7 joined pupils from four other local prep schools for a very varied day. Rehearsals began with a lovely anthem by Will Todd, ‘The Call of Wisdom’, which the children had had a chance to learn at school beforehand. Alex Mason, the Assistant Director of Music who was conducting, then introduced the singers to some new repertoire. This ranged from Handel’s ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ and Faure’s ‘Libera Me’ to the theme music from ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ and settings of well-known spirituals. The children picked up the new music quickly and accurately and produced a fabulous, strong sound from the beginning.
Musicians from Shrewsbury School gave a short concert including singing, piano, violin, guitar and harp – the children were highly impressed by the excellent standard, a real inspiration for them.
A rehearsal with the Chapel Choir followed before the day reached its grand finale with a concert by the combined prep schools and Chapel Choir, in which the audience was encouraged to participate as well as listen! Many parents attended and all thoroughly enjoyed the performance. We are all looking forward to next year’s event!
